Power to the People
You may recall that last April I went on a protest to oppose the building of a smelly rendering plant just outside of my village (see ‘No Stink’ – April 2007). Well last week the hearing finally came to chambers at Norfolk County Council so Daddy and I, together with about 70 other villagers jumped on a bus and headed to the hearing. After 3 tediously boring hours of listening to technical arguments from both sides, the vote was taken whether to approve planning permission for the stink farm.
We filled the gallery and many more people listened to proceedings from the adjoining room. Then eventually the verdict came in – 9 votes against and just 4 for. Victory.
There were many smiles and a lot of relief when the result was announced. Power to the People.
The result means that Banham Compost have to reapply for permission with more stringent environmental safeguards. No doubt we’ll have to fight it all over again at some point. And fight we will because I don’t want no stink farm in my back yard. Speaking of which, when I came home from County Hall I found our kitchen sitting in the back yard. How odd!
A couple more pictures for you. Mummy in her new bedroom.
The view from our new Velux bedroom window. What a bonus.
It’s not looking so pretty downstairs where Peter, David and Daddy apparently have been ripping out the kitchen and bathroom.
